Swatches: Lightweight Cotton Jersey Knit

There’s a reason you don’t see many tailored knit jackets: they’re hard to make! The natural stretch of knit fabric makes it difficult to sew, moving around and stretching rather than agreeably following the straight lines through the machine. Still, we keep making them because they’re an absolute dream to wear, combining a jacket’s tailored shape with a sweater’s cozy drape.

For the past few years we’ve been offering sportcoats and slack jackets in a buttery-soft 13oz wool and cotton jersey knit, that makes for a versatile go-to garment through the winter and into the cooler ends of fall and spring. This season we’re making a lighter weight jersey of nearly all cotton from the same Italian mill. This fabric paired with a light construction and minimal lining allows you to wear it longer into the warmer weather — even into summer, if you enjoy cool evenings on the water (It makes up into exactly the kind of low-maintenance garment you can toss in a weekend bag for just such an occasion.)

Available in a range of soft browns and blues, each colors serves as a great neutral to pair with jeans, chinos, or grey and tan tailored trousers. Below are a couple recent custom commissions in dark beige - a men’s slack jacket and women’s 3-button sport jacket. The future of chic is cozy!
